1721 Boston smallpox outbreak

In 1721, Boston experienced its worst outbreak of smallpox. 5.759 people out of around 10.600 in Boston were infected and over 844 died between April 1721 and February 1722. The outbreak would motivate Puritan minister Cotton Mather and Harvard physician Zabdiel Boylston to variolate hundreds of Bostonians in the Thirteen Colonies earliest experiment with public inoculation. Their efforts would inspire further use and research of variolation for immunizing people from smallpox, placing the Massachusetts Bay Colony at the epicenter of the Colonies first inoculation debate and profoundly imp ...

Advanced case management

Advanced case management, also known as dynamic or adaptive case management, refers to the coordination of a service request in finance, health, legal, citizen or human resources-related matters, on behalf of a subject such as a customer, a citizen, or an employee. According to British company Insight 2 Value, ACM "offers the ability to monitor, update, understand and interpret every piece of work as it is processed, enhancing both efficiency and security and providing a smarter, more integrated way to handle increasingly complex caseloads and shrinking resources."

Age adjustment

In epidemiology and demography, age adjustment, also called age standardization, is a technique used to allow populations to be compared when the age profiles of the populations are quite different.

Air China Flight 112

Air China Flight 112 was a scheduled international passenger flight on 15 March 2003 that carried a 72-year-old man infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome. This man would later become the index passenger for the infection of another 20 passengers and two aircraft crew, resulting in the dissemination of SARS north to inner Mongolia and south to Thailand. The incident demonstrated how a single person could spread disease via air travel and was one of a number of superspreading events in the global spread of SARS in 2003. The speed of air travel and the multidirectional routes taken ...

All of Us (initiative)

The All of Us Research Program is a research program created in 2015 during the tenure of Barack Obama with 0 million in funding that aims to make advances in tailoring medical care to the individual. The mission of AoU is to accelerate health and medical breakthroughs, enabling individualized prevention, treatment and care from all of us. The project aims to collect genetic and health data from one million volunteers. The initiative was announced during the 2015 State of the Union Address, and is run by the National Institutes of Health NIH. The founding program director was Eric Dishman, ...

Area compatibility factor

In survival analysis, the area compatibility factor, F, is used in indirect standardisation of population mortality rates. F = ∑ x s E x, t c s m x, t ∑ x s E x, t c / ∑ x E x, t c s m x, t ∑ x E x, t c {\displaystyle F={\frac {\sum _{x}{}^{s}E_{x,t}^{c}{}^{s}m_{x,t}}{\sum _{x}{}^{s}E_{x,t}^{c}}}\left/{\frac {\sum _{x}E_{x,t}^{c}{}^{s}m_{x,t}}{\sum _{x}E_{x,t}^{c}}}\right.} where: s E x, t c {\displaystyle {}^{s}E_{x,t}^{c}} is the standardised central exposed-to risk from age x to x + t for the standard population, E x, t c {\displaystyle E_{x,t}^{c}} is the central exposed-to risk from a ...
