Bicycle helmet

A bicycle helmet is designed to attenuate impacts to the head of a cyclist in falls while minimizing side effects such as interference with peripheral vision. There is ongoing scientific research into the degree of protection offered by bicycle helmets in the event of an accident, and the effects of helmet wearing on cyclist and motor vehicle driver behaviour. There is active debate over what can be concluded from available studies, and on whether the use of helmets by cyclists should be promoted or mandated, either just for children, for cyclists of all ages. In particular the debate over ...

Cycling jersey

A cycling jersey is a specialized jersey for cycling. While the vast majority of cyclists worldwide wear conventional clothing while riding, a jersey offers certain advantages for the sport-oriented cyclist. A cycling jersey is cut long in the back to accommodate the bent-over position used in sport-oriented cycling. Any pockets on the jersey are placed on the back panel as front pockets would tend to spill. The zipper is often made very long so that the cyclist can open up the jersey to allow for ventilation. The cycling jersey is usually worn with a tight fit in order to reduce air resis ...

Cycling glove

Putting a hand out to break a fall is a natural reaction. However, the hands are one of the more difficult parts of the body to repair. There is little or no spare skin, and immobilising the hands sufficiently to promote healing involves significant inconvenience to the patient. So, many cyclists choose to wear gloves all year round to help avoid skin damage in a fall.

Hovding is an airbag bicycle helmet. After seven years of research, development and testing, the Hovding was launched in November 2011. Hovding was initially created invented by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin in Malmo, Sweden in 2005 as a master thesis for the founders Master of Industrial Design at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University in Sweden. Their studies included the comparison of accelerometer data from bicycle crashes against typical cycling. The Hovding contains accelerometers that detect these unusual movements which then deploys the airbag if the movement patterns match t ...

Cycling shoe

Cycling shoes are shoes purpose-built for cycling. There are a variety of designs depending on the type and intensity of the cycling for which they are intended. Key features include rigidity, for more-efficient transfer of power from the cyclist to the pedals, weight, a method of attaching the shoe firmly to the pedal and adaptability for use on and off the bicycle. Most high-performance cycling shoes can be adjusted while in use, via a quick-adjusting system that has largely replaced laces.

Cycling shorts

Cycling shorts are short, skin-tight legwear designed to improve comfort and efficiency while cycling. They: do not get caught up in the bike chain or other parts of the bike; reduce wind resistance, increasing aerodynamic efficiency; compress the legs, which can help combat muscular fatigue; improve comfort during long rides with extra padding in the seat area called the cycling pad. draw sweat away from the skin to prevent chafing and rashes, and to cool the rider down through the process of evaporation; provide support to the genitals, analogously to a jock strap; reduce the weight of a ...

Tweed Run

The Tweed Run is a group bicycle ride through the centre of London, in which the cyclists are expected to dress in traditional British cycling attire, particularly tweed plus four suits. Any bicycle is acceptable on the Tweed Run, but classic vintage bicycles are encouraged. Some effort to recreate the spirit of a bygone era is always appreciated. The ride dubs itself "A Metropolitan Cycle Ride With a Bit of Style."
