Research centre: Centre for marine science and technology is the research centre of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University for coastal aquaculture and research activities in marine biotechnology. It is recognized as DST-fist, UGC-SAP, DRS, government of India. The centre is one of the few institutes in India offering PhD, Masters and doctor of philosophy in marine biotechnology. The center is an offshoot of Kamaraj Madurai University and later it was formulated as the Institute for Artemia research and training open by Dr John. Jayalalitha in the early 1990-ies and was later renamed to the Institute if the coastal area of research, and now operates in the name of the Center of marine Sciences and technologies advanced research activities in the field of marine genomics, marine Microbiology, nanobiotechnology, marine Pharmacology, marine biodiversity, microalgal technology, molecular biology etc.

Azhathangarai-Rajakkamangalam Estuary and marshy land contains a coastal ecosystem with mangroves habitat, areas of sand dunes and sea turtle breeding grounds near the beach Azhathangarai. Azhathangarai Rajakkamangalam estuary and marshy land is one of breeding and feeding grounds for many birds like painted stork, cormorant, spot bill pelicans, purple swaphen, sensor, Teal of trescone, red Heron, open bill stork, black winged stilts etc.
